The new normal. A phrase we have all come to hear. It entails many things, and in our industry, it means that UV-C lamp lighting has taken off.
So what is UV-C lighting?
UV-C light (or UltraViolet Lighting) has been a proven disinfectant for over 100 years. It has been used extensively for the past 40 years in various applications. UV-C has been used to disinfect drinking water, wastewater, air, pharmaceutical products, and surfaces against many different types of pathogens. UV-C lighting has rendered inactive all bacteria and viruses tested to date (many hundreds over the years, including coronaviruses).
UV-C light can inactivate pathogens (both viruses and bacteria) by impacting the cellular RNA and DNA, damaging nucleic acids, and preventing microorganisms from infecting and reproducing. UV-C lighting has been proven to be extremely useful as an air and surface disinfectant.
UV-C from that originates from the sun is filtered out by the Earth's atmosphere. Exposure to specific wavelengths of UV-C radiation is hazardous to humans and animals' skin and eyes. Despite this, when appropriately designed, installed correctly with safety instructions followed, UV-C lighting is a safe and highly effective form of disinfection.
UV-C can be hazardous to the skin and eyes. We have developed safety features on our fixtures that prevent the UV-C lamps from operating when a room is occupied. While many studies have been done on the effects of UV-C, and the results show a very minimal effect in short term exposure, humans/animals should never be allowed to be in direct radiation of UV-C light.
